In this issue:
When we face challenging seasons and difficult situations, the greatest struggle is often the loneliness we feel in the midst of them. Our feelings, our hurts, our fears and our burdens we believe to be unique to us, and thusly believe that no one else really understands our pain. From that perspective, it becomes difficult to share with others, and difficult to see beyond the current moment. If you enjoy Tolkien like I do, you might be reminded of a moment in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King when Frodo is nearing Mount Doom and struggling with the burden of the ring. When Sam asks him to think of the Shire, Frodo responds that he can't remember the taste of food, the feel of water or memory of grass; he says he's "naked in the dark", alone, with nothing before him but the burning eye of the enemy. In our darkest moments, we may share similar feelings to Frodo; yet, we can take hope that there is One who does know our griefs and sorrows better than we could imagine.
In Psalm 139, David reminds us that God knows us far better than we often think. Though we may feel alone in our struggles, our God discerns our thoughts from afar, and is acquainted with all our ways, knowing our words before they're even on our tongues (v. 2-4). In the midst of this, David asks in verses 7-12:
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
Our heavenly Father, who knew us before our days began, knows our pains, our sorrows, our grief. He is present in our difficult seasons just as he is in our seasons of joy and peace. As David adds in verses 17-18:
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.
In your hardest seasons, remember that the God who formed you, redeemed you, and loves you, knows you better than you know yourself. Take comfort in knowing that He is a "very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)
